     The Last Lesson

Important characters

*Franz: French student

*M.Hamel-Language teacher

The narrator (Franz)  started school very late in the morning and he feared his class teacher(M.Hamel). M. Hamel would question him on Participates. But Franz did not know anything about it. So he was in great dread of a scolding from M. Hamel. He thought of running away but resisted himself and went to school.

When he passed from the town hall, he saw a big crowd in front of the bulletin board which displayed all the bad news for two years. The people usually got the news of the lost battle, the draft, the orders of the commanding officer and other important information. while he was going on the way. The blacksmith called him, "Don't go so fast, bub; you'll get to your school in plenty of time!" Franz just ignored it and reached the school.

Usually, there was a lot of hustle and bustle when school began but it was all so still that day. He could depend on the commotion to get to his desk without being seen. He was frightened this time but fortunately, nothing happened. No punishment. Even M.Hamel saw and asked him very kindly to take his seat.

After taking his seat, he saw M. Hamel was in formal clothes that he wore only on inspection and price days and was surprised by the presence of the village elders. They were sitting quietly on the backbenches. While France was wondering, M. Hamel mounted on his chair and said "My children this is the last lesson. As the order has come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools Alsace and Lorraine. This is your last French lesson.

What a thunderclap these words to me!

But Franz felt sorry for not learning his lesson. He never liked his books. He didn't have any interest in Grammar and history. But now they were old friends that he could not give up. Even he started liking M.Hamel.The idea that he would not teach them from the next day made Franz forget all his ruler and cranky nature. It was French turn to recite the participles, Franz got mixed up and confused. but M Hamel did not scold Franz.

Instead, M. Hamel showed his concern that the people of Alsace generally give no importance to the French. He not only blame his parents but himself too. Hamal went on talk of the French language. He declared that the French language is the most beautiful in the world. It is the clearest and the most logical.  we must guard it among us because when people are enslaved, as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key To their prison.

All at once, the church clock struck twelve. The trumpets of the Prussian soldiers sounded their Windows.M Hamel stood up,  very pale, he tried to speak but something choked him and he was unable to speak it out. So he turned to the blackboard and wrote as large as he could: "Vive La France!"(Long Live France)

Then he stopped and without a word he made a gesture to us with his hand that "school is dismissed- you may go".
