A Triumph of Surgery – Detailed Summary

Introduction

“A Triumph of Surgery” is a humorous and touching story written by James Herriot. The story revolves around a small dog named Tricki and his rich owner Mrs. Pumphrey. It shows how excessive love and pampering can harm pets instead of helping them.

Detailed Summary

Mrs. Pumphrey and Her Pet Tricki

Mrs. Pumphrey was a wealthy lady who loved her dog Tricki very much. She treated him like a baby and gave him everything he wanted. She fed him rich foods such as cream cakes, chocolates, Horlicks, malt, cod-liver oil, and extra meals between regular meals.

Because of this overfeeding, Tricki became extremely fat and lazy. He had no energy left. His eyes became red, and he refused to eat his food. He spent most of his time lying on the carpet and did not enjoy walks anymore.

Mr. Herriot Examines Tricki

Mrs. Pumphrey became very worried and called the veterinary doctor, Mr. Herriot. When he examined Tricki, he immediately understood that the dog’s illness was caused by overfeeding and lack of exercise.

Mr. Herriot advised Mrs. Pumphrey to reduce Tricki’s food and give him more exercise. However, she was too attached to her dog and could not stop feeding him rich food items.

Soon, Tricki’s condition became worse. One day, Mrs. Pumphrey called Mr. Herriot again in panic because Tricki was seriously ill. He was listless and unhealthy.

Tricki Goes to the Surgery

Mr. Herriot decided to take Tricki to his surgery (clinic) for treatment. Mrs. Pumphrey was heartbroken and thought Tricki might not survive. She packed many things for him, including bowls, coats, toys, and cushions.

At the surgery, Mr. Herriot gave Tricki no medicine at all. Instead, he simply stopped feeding him rich food for two days and gave him only water. Tricki rested and slowly began to feel hungry again.

Recovery Through Exercise and Proper Diet

After a few days, Tricki started mixing with other dogs at the surgery. He began to run, jump, and play with them. The healthy routine, simple food, and exercise slowly brought him back to normal health.

Tricki became active and energetic again. He regained his appetite and enjoyed life happily. Mr. Herriot was pleased because the dog recovered naturally without any medical operation or expensive treatment.

Mrs. Pumphrey’s Reaction

Mrs. Pumphrey visited the surgery after hearing that Tricki had recovered. She was overjoyed to see her healthy and active dog running toward her.

She believed that Mr. Herriot had performed a wonderful medical treatment or surgery. Filled with gratitude, she called it “a triumph of surgery.”

In reality, Tricki recovered because of:

  • Proper diet

  • Physical exercise
