I. Answer these questions.

1. How does Toto come to Grandfather’s private zoo?

Toto was bought by Grandfather from a tonga-driver for five rupees. The tonga-driver kept Toto tied to a feeding trough.


2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?

Toto had bright eyes, white teeth, quick fingers, and a long tail. His face looked mischievous and attractive. That is why he was called pretty.


3. Why does Grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how?

Grandfather went to Saharanpur to collect his pension. He carried Toto in a black canvas bag because Toto was too mischievous to leave at home.


4. Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?

The ticket collector saw Toto’s face from the bag and thought he looked like a dog. So he charged Grandfather the fare for a dog.


5. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?

Toto first tested the water with his hand. Then he slowly entered the tub and enjoyed bathing. He copied humans while bathing.

One day, he got into a kettle of hot water placed on the fire. The water became hotter and hotter, and Toto almost boiled himself alive.

Toto was very naughty and destructive. He tore clothes, broke dishes, and damaged many things. The family could not control him, so they sold him.
