Part 2: The Black Aeroplane – Detailed Summary

Introduction

The Black Aeroplane is a mysterious and thrilling story written by Frederick Forsyth. The story mixes adventure, suspense, and mystery. It tells us about a pilot who faces danger during a night flight and is saved by a strange black aeroplane whose pilot later disappears mysteriously.

Detailed Summary

The Pilot Begins His Journey

The narrator of the story is a pilot. One night, he was flying his old Dakota aeroplane from Paris to London. The weather was clear, and stars were shining in the sky. Everything looked peaceful.

The pilot was happy because he wanted to spend the holiday with his family in England. He looked forward to having a good breakfast with them the next morning.

He checked his instruments and saw that there was enough fuel for the journey.

Storm Clouds Ahead

While flying over France, the pilot suddenly saw huge dark storm clouds in front of him. The clouds looked dangerous like big black mountains.

The pilot had two choices:

  • Go back to Paris

  • Fly through the storm

He did not want to turn back because he wanted to reach home quickly. So, he decided to take the risk and fly into the storm clouds.

Soon the aeroplane entered the dark clouds.

Trouble Inside the Storm

Inside the storm, everything became frightening.

  • The aeroplane jumped and twisted in the air.

  • The pilot could not see anything outside.

  • The black clouds surrounded the plane completely.

  • Lightning flashed around him.

Suddenly, important instruments stopped working.

  • The compass stopped.

  • The radio stopped working.

  • The pilot could not contact the control tower.

Now he was lost in the stormy sky with very little fuel left.

The pilot became scared because he did not know the direction to London anymore.

Appearance of the Black Aeroplane

At that dangerous moment, the pilot suddenly saw another aeroplane near him.

It was a black aeroplane.

The pilot of the strange plane waved his hand, asking the narrator to follow him. The narrator felt relieved because someone was there to help him.

The black aeroplane flew ahead, and the narrator followed it through the storm clouds.

The mysterious pilot guided him carefully through the dangerous weather.

Safe Landing

After some time, the narrator finally came out of the storm clouds. He could now see the runway lights of an airport below him.

His fuel tank was almost empty. He quickly landed the aeroplane safely.

The narrator felt thankful to the pilot of the black aeroplane who had saved his life.

The Mystery Deepens

After landing, the narrator went to the control tower and asked the woman there about the other pilot.

He wanted to thank him.

But the woman looked surprised. She told him something shocking:

  • No other aeroplane was flying in the sky that night.

  • According to the radar, only the narrator’s Dakota aeroplane was there.

The narrator was confused and amazed.

He looked outside at the stormy sky and wondered:

“Who was the pilot of the black aeroplane?”

The story ends with this mystery unanswered.
