NCERT English Class 10th – The Hack Driver Detailed Summary

Footprints Without Feet chapter The Hack Driver is written by Sinclair Lewis. It is a humorous and interesting story about a young lawyer who is cleverly fooled by a hack driver. The story shows how appearances can be deceptive and how easily innocent people can be tricked.

Introduction of the Story

The narrator of the story is a young lawyer. After completing his law studies, he starts working in a law firm. He dreams of arguing important cases in court, but instead he is given the unpleasant job of serving summons to people. Many times, people behave rudely with him and even threaten him. He dislikes his work very much.

One day, the lawyer is sent to a village called New Mullion to deliver a summons to a man named Oliver Lutkins, who is needed as a witness in a court case.

Arrival at New Mullion

The lawyer imagines that New Mullion will be a peaceful and beautiful village. However, when he arrives there, he is disappointed. The streets are muddy, and the shops are old and dull. The village looks unattractive.

At the railway station, he meets a cheerful and friendly hack driver. A hack driver is a person who drives a horse cart for carrying passengers. The driver introduces himself as Bill Magnuson.

Bill seems very kind and helpful. When the lawyer asks him about Oliver Lutkins, Bill says that he knows him very well. He tells the lawyer that Lutkins is a clever fellow who often avoids people.

Search for Oliver Lutkins

The lawyer hires Bill’s hack to help him find Lutkins. Bill takes him from one place to another around the village.

First, they go to Fritz’s shop, where Lutkins is said to be playing poker. But they do not find him there.

Then they visit:

  • Gustaff’s barber shop

  • Gray’s barber shop

  • The pool room

  • Other places in the village

At every place, they hear that Lutkins had just left a little while earlier.

The lawyer completely trusts Bill because Bill speaks in a friendly and convincing manner. Bill also keeps talking about village life and the people of New Mullion. The lawyer enjoys his company so much that he starts liking the simple country life.

Lunch with Bill

During lunchtime, Bill takes the lawyer to his home and gives him a simple lunch prepared by his wife. The lawyer feels comfortable and relaxed with Bill. He even begins to think that village people are honest and friendly.

However, Bill cleverly keeps wasting time while pretending to help the lawyer.

Visit to Lutkins’ Mother

Finally, Bill says that Lutkins may have gone to his mother’s farm, which is a few miles away from the village.

On reaching there, they meet a fierce old woman — Lutkins’ mother. She is very angry and threatens them with a hot iron rod. She shouts at them and orders them to leave immediately.

Frightened by her behavior, both the lawyer and Bill quickly run away from the farm.

By evening, the lawyer fails to serve the summons and returns to the city disappointed.

The Truth is Revealed

Back at the office, the lawyer’s chief becomes angry because the case is important and Lutkins must be found.

The next day, the lawyer returns to New Mullion with another man who knows Lutkins personally.

As soon as they arrive at the station, the lawyer sees Bill laughing and talking happily with Lutkins’ mother. He points toward Bill and praises him for helping throughout the previous day.

Then the other man reveals the shocking truth:

Bill Magnuson himself is Oliver Lutkins!

The lawyer realizes that he has been fooled the whole day by the very person he was searching for. Lutkins had cleverly taken him around the village to avoid receiving the summons.

Finally, the lawyer serves the summons on Lutkins, while Lutkins and his mother laugh at the lawyer’s innocence.
