Footprints Without Feet chapter The Making of a Scientist is written by Robert W. Peterson. The chapter is about the life of Richard H. Ebright, a curious and hardworking boy who became a famous scientist because of his interest in nature, learning, and experiments.

Detailed Summary

Early Childhood of Richard Ebright

Richard Ebright was born in Reading. He was an intelligent and curious child from a very young age. His father died when he was very young, so his mother took great care of him. She encouraged his interest in learning and helped him develop good habits.

His mother gave him books, telescopes, microscopes, cameras, and other learning materials. She also took him on trips and taught him to explore the world around him. Because of this support, Richard developed a deep interest in science and nature.

Interest in Butterflies

When Richard was in second grade, he started collecting butterflies. He especially loved studying monarch butterflies. At first, he only collected them for fun, but gradually he became more interested in understanding their life cycle and behavior.

One day, he lost in a butterfly-collecting competition because another boy had collected more butterflies than him. Richard’s mother then bought him a book called The Travels of Monarch X. This book changed his life because it taught him how real scientists study butterflies.
