NCERT English Class 10th – Mijbil the Otter Detailed Summary

Introduction

The chapter “Mijbil the Otter” is written by Gavin Maxwell. It is a true story about the writer’s pet otter named Mijbil, also called Mij. The chapter describes how the author brought the otter from Iraq to London and how a strong friendship developed between them. It also shows the playful and intelligent nature of otters.

Detailed Summary

Journey to Basra

The author was living in southern Iraq in the city of Basra. Earlier, he had kept a dog as a pet, but after the dog died, he decided to keep an otter instead. In that region, otters were commonly found near rivers and marshes.

One day, the author’s friend arranged an otter for him. The otter was brought to the author in a sack. When the sack was opened, a small creature with soft fur and shining eyes came out. The author immediately liked him and named him Mijbil.

The author later discovered that Mij belonged to a rare species of otters, probably unknown to scientists at that time. The species was later named Maxwell’s Otter after the author.

Mijbil’s First Days

At first, Mijbil was frightened and uncomfortable in the new surroundings. The author kept him in the bathroom because it was safe and easy to clean. Slowly, Mij became friendly and playful.

Mij loved water very much. He spent hours playing in the bathtub. He rolled, dived, splashed, and enjoyed himself happily. The author noticed that otters are naturally playful animals.

Mijbil also became attached to the author. He followed him everywhere and behaved like a child. Within a few days, a close bond developed between them.

Mijbil’s Clever Nature

Mijbil was very intelligent. He learned many things quickly. He could open the taps and play with water himself. He loved shiny objects and toys.

One of his favourite games was with marbles. He would place marbles on the floor and run after them excitedly. He also played with ping-pong balls and other objects.

The author described Mij as a joyful and energetic creature. His activities filled the house with fun and excitement.

Problems During Air Travel

Soon, the author had to travel back to London. Taking Mijbil on an airplane was difficult because airlines were not ready to allow an otter as a pet.

Finally, the author got permission from another airline. Mij was packed in a special box for the journey. However, during the flight, Mij became restless and escaped from the box.

He moved around the airplane and frightened some passengers. The air hostess and passengers became nervous, but the author finally managed to catch him. After some time, Mij calmed down.

Life in London

After reaching London, Mij adapted well to city life. The author often took him for walks using a lead, just like a dog.

People in London were surprised to see such a strange animal. Many people could not recognize Mijbil correctly. Some thought he was a baby seal, while others called him a squirrel, walrus, or even a bear cub.

Mij enjoyed exploring streets and playing around. He remained active, playful, and loving.
