NCERT English Class 10th – The Thief’s Story Detailed Summary

First Flight
The Thief's Story
Ruskin Bond

Introduction

The Thief’s Story is a touching story written by Ruskin Bond. It is about trust, kindness, and change in a person’s life. The story shows how love and honesty can transform even a thief into a better human being.

The story is narrated by a young thief named Hari Singh. He meets a simple and kind man named Anil. Although Hari first plans to cheat Anil, Anil’s trust and goodness slowly change his heart.

Detailed Summary

Hari Singh – A Young Thief

The story begins with Hari Singh, a fifteen-year-old boy who earns money by stealing. He changes his name every month to avoid being caught by the police and former employers.

One day, he meets Anil at a wrestling match. Anil is about twenty-five years old, tall, lean, and easy-going. Hari understands that Anil is a simple and careless man, so he thinks he can easily fool him.

Hari approaches Anil and says that he wants to work for him. Anil agrees to keep him as a cook even though Hari cannot cook properly.

Hari Starts Living with Anil

Hari begins staying with Anil in his small room. At first, Hari cooks terrible food, but Anil does not become angry. Instead, he teaches Hari how to cook.

Hari notices that Anil earns money by writing articles for magazines. Though Anil does not earn regularly, he is generous and spends money freely with friends.

Hari slowly becomes comfortable in Anil’s company. He starts liking him because Anil treats him kindly and never doubts him.

Anil Teaches Hari

Anil promises to teach Hari how to read and write. This is very important for Hari because he realizes that education can help him lead a better life.

Hari understands that if he becomes educated, he can earn money honestly and respectfully. For the first time, he starts dreaming of a better future.

Anil also teaches him to write complete sentences and adds numbers. Hari begins changing internally because nobody had ever trusted or cared for him before.

The Temptation to Steal

One evening, Anil returns home with a bundle of notes because he has sold one of his articles. Hari sees the money and becomes tempted to steal it.

That night, when Anil is sleeping peacefully, Hari quietly takes the money from under the mattress. He plans to run away by the 10:30 train to Lucknow.

Hari leaves the room and reaches the railway station. However, he misses the train because he arrives late.

Hari’s Inner Conflict

After missing the train, Hari sits alone on a bench. Heavy rain starts falling, and he becomes restless.

He begins thinking deeply. He realizes that Anil trusted him completely. Unlike others, Anil had never treated him badly. He also remembers that Anil was teaching him to read and write, which could completely change his future.

Hari understands that stealing money would give him only temporary happiness, but education and trust could give him a permanent and honest life.

For the first time in his life, Hari feels guilty for stealing.

Returning the Money

Hari decides to return to Anil’s room. Quietly, he places the wet notes back under the mattress and lies down to sleep.

The next morning, Anil gives Hari a fifty-rupee note and tells him that they will now start writing full sentences.

Hari notices that the note is still wet from the rain. He understands that Anil already knows about the theft but chooses not to mention it.

Anil’s kindness and forgiveness deeply touch Hari’s heart. Hari realizes that Anil has truly trusted and forgiven him.

Conclusion

The story ends on a positive and emotional note. Hari changes from a thief into a responsible person because of Anil’s trust, patience, and kindness.
