Dowry system in india is present since ages. Parents of young brides give presents and other household items to them on their marriage.  But some evil persons demand more dowry. They even burn them for dowry. Many young brides commit suicide due to this evil system. There are laws to contain dowry.  But even with that this tradition still continues.
