The Black Aeroplane

By:- Frederick Forsyth

"The Black Aeroplane” is a mysterious story written by Fredrick Forsyth. A pilot was flying an old Dakota aeroplane at 1 O’clock at night. The moon was coming up in the east behind him.The stars were shining and there was not a trace of clouds. He was flying from Parish to London . He was extremely happy. He was lost in the dreams of his holiday and family. Around 1:30 a.m. he decided to call the Paris Control Room to enquire about the route and location. The Control Room instructed him to turn twelve degrees west. The pilot checked the map and the compass, switched over to his second and last fuel tank and turned the plane twelve degrees west towards England. He expected to join his family for breakfast.

Paris was about 150 km behind him. Then he saw the storm clouds. They looked like black mountains in front of him. He knew he could not fly over them.  Also he didn’t have enough fuel to fly around them south or north. Initially,he decided to go back to Paris.  But he also wanted to get home. So he took the  risk and flew into the storm . He could see nothing outside his aeroplane. Everything was black.  The old Aeroplane jumped and twisted in the air. He looked at the compass. It was gone. Then he tried to contact Paris Control. But he could not contact it too. He was lost in the storm.

Then in the Black cloud, suddenly he saw another aeroplane. It had no lights on its wings. It was flying next to him in the storm. The pilot of the black aeroplane asked him to follow him. So he followed him. He flew for half an hour. The fuel was to last for five or ten minutes only. He began to feel frightened.  Then he started to go down.

Suddenly he was on the runway.  After landing, the pilot immediately rushed to the Control Centre and asked about the black aeroplane which guided him all the way to the airport. Woman looked at him strangely. Then she laughed.  She said that there was no other aeroplane except his. This is one of the most mysterious and shocking endings to the story, as he did not know who the pilot was in the black aeroplane without lights who helped him survive.
