Chapter:-5, The Hundred Dresses-1

By:- El Bsor Ester

Main characters

  • Wanda Petronski :- Polish Immigrant

  • Peggy:- American girl

  • Madeline ( Maddie):- American girl

It was Monday. Wanda Petronski was not in her seat. Nobody including Peggy and Madeline saw her absence. They started all the fun. Wanda used to sit next to the last seat in the last row. It was room 13.

Wanda was a quiet and shy girl. She was a Polish immigrant, who had come to America with her family. She attended school with American children who found her name to be strange in the classroom. This is because they all had easier names. She was poor and was always seen wearing a faded blue dress. Her classmates teased her because she claimed to have a hundred dresses “all lined up” in her closet albeit, always being seen wearing one. The ones who mainly teased her were the two best friends, Peggy and Maddie. Peggy was the most famous girl in school while anyone barely knew Wanda.

Peggy and Maddie used to wait for Wanda before school even if it meant getting late. Maddie, a poor girl herself, did not like it when Peggy made fun of Wanda. She feared that she could be next. She wanted Peggy to stop making fun of Wanda, but could not summon courage to face her as she feared she’d lose her best friend. However, Peggy’s intention was never to hurt Wanda but she was curious as to why Wanda had to lie that she had a hundred dresses in her closet.

One day in their school a drawing and colour contest was organised.  For girls, this contest consisted of designing dresses and for boys,  of designing motorboats.

Next day the class had assembled.  Miss Mason announced the winners of drawing and colour contest. Jack Beggles had won for the boys. And for the girls Wanda was the winner of girls' medal. But Wanda was absent that day. Miss Mason asked the children to look at Wanda's beautiful drawing.

The  children clapped their hands in joy. The boys whistled with fingers in their mouths.

That contest and the beautiful drawings of the dresses made her classmates regret for making fun of such a creative girl.
