“How I Taught My Grandmother to Read” is a heart-touching story written by Sudha Murty. The story shows the importance of education and the deep bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter.
Introduction of the Story
The narrator of the story is a young girl who lives in a village in Karnataka with her grandparents. Her grandmother was very kind, loving, and hardworking, but she was illiterate because she never got a chance to go to school in her childhood.
At that time, a popular Kannada magazine named Karmaveera published a serial story called “Kashi Yatre.” The grandmother loved listening to this story. Every week, the narrator read the new episode aloud to her grandmother.
Grandmother’s Interest in the Story
The grandmother became deeply attached to the story because it was emotional and interesting. She eagerly waited every week to know what would happen next in the serial.
The story “Kashi Yatre” was about an old woman who wished to visit Kashi (Varanasi), a holy place for Hindus. Since the grandmother was old herself, she connected emotionally with the character in the serial.
Whenever the weekly magazine arrived, the grandmother immediately asked her granddaughter to read it aloud.
The Turning Point
One day, the narrator had to go to a nearby village for a wedding and stayed there for a few days. During that time, the new issue of Karmaveera arrived at home.
The grandmother eagerly waited for someone to read the story to her, but nobody could help her properly. She felt helpless because she could not read the magazine herself.
She tried hard to recognize the letters and understand the words, but she failed. This incident made her realize the pain and disadvantage of being illiterate.
When the narrator returned home, she found her grandmother upset and crying.
Grandmother’s Decision
The grandmother confessed that she had felt dependent and weak because she could not read on her own. She explained that education gives independence and self-respect.
She then made a strong decision: she wanted to learn how to read and write, even though she was already sixty-two years old.
She requested her granddaughter to become her teacher and promised to study sincerely.
The Learning Process
The narrator happily agreed to teach her grandmother. Every day after school, she taught her grandmother the Kannada alphabet, words, and simple sentences.
The grandmother worked very hard like a disciplined student. She practiced regularly and never missed her lessons.
Her determination and dedication impressed the narrator greatly.
Saraswati Puja Day
After a few months, during the festival of Dasara, on the special day of Saraswati Puja (the worship of the goddess of learning), the grandmother achieved her goal.
She was finally able to read a novel on her own without anyone’s help.
The grandmother touched the feet of her young granddaughter as a mark of respect for her teacher. The narrator felt emotional and embarrassed because elders are usually respected by younger people.
The grandmother explained that a teacher should always be respected, regardless of age.
