Two Stories About Flying

Part 1: His First Flight – Detailed Summary

First Flight is written by Liam O'Flaherty. The story teaches us about courage, confidence, and overcoming fear.

Detailed Summary

The story is about a young seagull who is afraid to fly. Unlike his two brothers and sister, he does not have the courage to take his first flight. His parents try many times to encourage him, but he becomes frightened whenever he looks down at the vast sea below.

The Young Seagull’s Fear

One day, the young seagull stands alone on a ledge of a high cliff. His brothers and sister have already learned how to fly. They enjoy flying over the sea and catching fish. But the young seagull feels certain that his wings will not support him. He fears that he will fall into the sea and die.

Because of this fear, he refuses to move from the ledge. His parents scold him and threaten to leave him alone if he does not fly. Even then, he cannot gather enough courage.

Feeling Hungry and Lonely

The next day, the young seagull becomes very hungry. His family flies around happily while he watches them from the cliff. His parents and siblings eat fish, but nobody brings food for him.

He feels lonely and helpless. His hunger grows stronger. He cries and begs his mother to give him some food.

Mother’s Clever Plan

The seagull’s mother understands that fear is stopping him from flying. She decides to teach him a lesson.

She takes a piece of fish in her beak and flies near him. The young seagull becomes excited and moves toward the food. But just when he tries to reach it, his mother stops in mid-air, slightly away from him.

Driven by hunger, the young seagull jumps forward to catch the fish.

The First Flight

As soon as he jumps, he falls downward in fear. He screams loudly because he thinks he is going to die. But suddenly, he feels his wings spreading automatically.

The wind rushes against his body and supports him. He starts flapping his wings and realizes that he can fly after all. His fear disappears, and he begins flying joyfully in the sky.

His family becomes happy and encourages him with loud cries. They fly around him proudly.

Learning to Fly

Soon, the young seagull flies confidently over the sea. Then he becomes tired and tries to stand on the water. At first, he is afraid again, but he discovers that he can float safely on the sea.

His family gathers around him and praises him for his success. Finally, the young seagull overcomes his fear and learns the important lesson that courage comes through practice and confidence.
