Introduction

The poem The Trees tells us about trees that are moving out of the house into the forest. The poet uses this idea to show that nature wants freedom. The poem also talks about the relationship between humans and nature.


Stanza-wise Explanation

Stanza 1

“The trees inside are moving out into the forest…”

Explanation

The poet says that the trees kept inside the house are now going back to the forest. The forest has been empty for many days because the trees were trapped inside. Now the trees are returning to their natural place.

The branches move under the roof like patients going to a hospital. The leaves try hard to move towards the glass windows to reach the outside world.

Simple Meaning

Nature cannot stay trapped for long. Trees want freedom and their natural environment.


Stanza 2

“The smell of leaves and lichen still reaches like a voice…”

Explanation

The poet says that the smell of leaves and plants can still be felt in the house. The glass windows are breaking because the trees are pushing out strongly. The roots work all night to separate themselves from the floor of the house.

Simple Meaning

The trees are trying with full force to escape from human control and return to nature.


Stanza 3

“The head is full of whispers…”

Explanation

The poet feels restless and hears soft whispering sounds in her mind. The night is quiet and fresh like a whole moon shining in the sky. The poet sits near the open window and writes letters.

Simple Meaning

The poet feels the powerful movement of nature around her.


Stanza 4

“My head is full of whispers…”

Explanation

The poet hears the trees moving outside. The branches move like newly discharged patients coming out of a hospital. The trees finally reach the forest where they truly belong.

The trees are finally free and happy in nature.
