Written by Robert Frost
The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock treeHas given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.
The poet was standing under a hemlock tree in winter. A crow sitting on the tree suddenly shook the branches. Because of this, soft snow particles, called “dust of snow,” fell on the poet.
This small and simple incident changed the poet’s sad mood. Before this, he was unhappy and feeling bad about his day. But after the snow fell on him, he felt fresh and happy. He realized that even small things in nature can bring joy and change our feelings.
A crow sitting on a hemlock tree shakes the branch, and snow falls on the poet.
Crow → a black bird
Hemlock tree → a poisonous tree
Dust of snow → very fine particles of snow
Usually, crow and hemlock tree are considered symbols of sadness or negativity, but here they bring a positive change.
